Turn or Burn

1 Samuel 17:30 (KJV) And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.

Davids Brother Eliab had just come uncorked on David for actually having a Passion for God.

1 Samuel 17:29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

and immediately turned from Him to speak to another.

When faced with an angry/convicted brother, David doesn't spend any thought on it at all but instead gets back to the real issue - Goliath

Couple of things this morning

1. Who are you being attacked by?

2. Who in your life knows their wrong but instead turns their negative attention towards you?

3. How does Satan (Goliath) play into this battle?

4. Who or what do I need to turn my feelings from to focus on the real issue?

5. Are you wasting time thinking on the insignificant (Eliab) instead of the Significant (God)?

Who are You Jealous of instead of Happy For?

1 Samuel 17:28 (ESV) Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”

Obviously, Eliab was jealous of the courage shown by David.

Consequently, he made three accusations against David:

Þ  He accused David of pride, of having a haughty spirit.

Þ  He accused David of neglecting his duty, suggesting that he should be back home tending the sheep.

Þ  He accused David of a wicked curiosity, of coming just to watch the battle take place.

Keep in mind that Samuel had rejected Eliab as future king of Israel and had appointed David instead, and the older brother had witnessed the secret anointing (16:6-13). Moreover, David had already been taken into the court of Saul to serve the king.
An irritating jealousy had obviously captured the heart of the older brother.
As a result, witnessing the bold, courageous anger of David against Goliath only deepened the jealousy within Eliab.

Eliab's life hadn’t turned out the way He thought.

1. He experienced rejection by God through Samuel not picking Eliab to be the future king

2. He experienced jealousy as He witnessed the secret anointing of his younger brother.

3. He experienced the irritant of David allowed to go to the court of Saul and serve the King.

And seeing David being Blessed as well as Bold against Goliath only deepened the bitterness and anger within Eliab.

Who am I Jealous of because I believe that they are more blessed than I?

How is it affecting the way I view them and others like them?

How is it affecting the Life God has called me to?

What are you missing?

1 Samuel 17:25-27 (KJV)
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
All the men
Talking amongst themselves “have you seen?”
Trying to temp each other to take the step “the man who kills him shall receive a-b-c”

David sees it differently

What shall be done to the man that killeth this philistine……?

And taketh away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
Reproach         David saw the Problem as the men’s fear being a reproach as well as Goliaths challenge to the people of God.

Uncircumcised-This man was not ordained of God to greatness, this man was an    unbeliever, what power does He have?

Defy                = Defame This man was taking away the Glory of God by challenging the    people of God

Living              God is very much alive, very aware of the situation, and waiting, simply waiting for someone to step up to show Himself ALIVE to All.

What are men talking about in fear – Economy, Finances, Jobs

How are they encouraging one another –

With a false sense of faith
And an empty sense of Hope that maybe God will help someone

What are men Missing?

Our Fear is a Reproach upon the Name of our God

We are Ordained of God to Greatness

John 14:12-14 (KJV)
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Our Unbelief actually Causes men to reject God

God knows our Needs and is waiting for us to step out.

What am I missing?

My Fear is an irrational fear that brings reproach upon who my God really is.
I am ordained for Greatness not uselessness
My lack of faith causes men to not have faith
I can talk all I want about faith
I can share all I want about faith
But men have faith when they see my Faith.

James 2:17-20 (KJV)
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

What is my fear?

What do we Fear?

1 Samuel 17:24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
What do all men fear?

ALL the men
SAW the Man
SORE (Wholly) afraid

1. What do all men fear?

Is it our inability to defeat an enemy?

This is important because this fear keeps us from living by faith

2. What do I fear?

Failure
Embarrassment
Being Wrong

Could you imagine stepping out onto that field?

3. Why do I fear?

HOW DOES GOD PLAY INTO ALL OF THIS?

He Ain't Heavy

1 Samuel 17:17-18 (KJV)  And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren; 18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

The Respected Father to the Responsible Son (summery)

Bring food to your brothers in Battle
Also bring ten Cheeses to their commander to enlist His favor
See if your Brothers are doing well
Bring evidence back that they are Ok

What is God saying to me today?

Who are my brothers in Battle?

What are their Fears?

Are they facing a Giant?
Are they feeling Fearful of failure?
Where should they step up in faith and where should they step out?

What are their needs?

Are they hungry and in need of food?
            Physically/Spiritually

Ten Cheeses to their commander to enlist His favor
If God is our commander, Prayer enlists His favor
                     What should I pray?

See if their well.
This is a personal call to check on them
            To personally communicate with them

Bring some token from them
In our passage this means a lock of hair or clip of a nail (something personal)

God wants them to be honest with me so that I can pray with clarity to Him about their needs.
I need to have something sure from them to bring to God

He/she is my brother, how is God calling me to care for them today?

Love you guys

Big Shoes Still need to be Filled

I am so impressed by all of You.
I never imagined working with such an amazing group of people.
You are so passionate and so wonderful.

Here is something that I hope will encourage you.

1 Samuel 17:12-16 Big Brother

Vs 12               Davids Father was a Respected man among men

Vs 13-14         Davids Brothers were in the Army

                                    Eliab                1st
                                    Abinadab        2nd
                                    Shammah        3rd
                                    David was the Youngest

Vs 15               David did what He was told. Very Responsible child

Vs 16               For 40 days the Philistine challenged Israel to send them a man
Meaning for 40 days no man stood up
For 40 days every man waited for someone else to do the work
For 40 days every man gathered, grumbled, and gave in to their fears

Jesse Raised His boys to be men.

He taught them the value of public service
He taught them the importance of responsibility
He as a respected man, was known as a man among His people

But for 40 days His 1st three boys would not step up, Why?

They were fearful not faithful (full of faith)

They were responsible to themselves meaning they were more worried about their lives.

They were respectful waiting for their king to step up. (Poor Leadership) I believe that this was an excuse to save their own hides as to hide behind the leader.

This could be true of Abinadab and Shammah as they waited for Eliab to step up.

I have a father who was well respected

Who taught me to serve others
            Who taught me responsibility
Who taught me to be respectful

Where am I fearful?

Where do I worry more about myself than others?

Who am I standing behind waiting to step up and blaming for not doing so?

Who am I a big Brother to?

And who am I hindering from taking great steps of faith because I won’t?

I Love You Guys
